I have

Truth be told, I have no idea what I have discovered. Or am on the edge of discovering anyway. I think I know what it is but I am uncertain if my equations are saying what I think they're saying. If I am right then this could be the greatest discovery since the invention of the Time Turners themselves.

But I mustn't get ahead of myself. I have to continue my work on the theory and ensure the equations are solid before I can even think of venturing into any sort of experimentation.

I'm just concerned about those holes in the equations. The following ones work but

Runes? Maybe I need runes to bring those gaps. That's an area worth investigating.

Jarveys, I have found, are very entertaining creatures. And not for the swearing. They seem to possess some of the ferrets natural ability to, well, ferret. I would also swear they have a sense of humour. The number of times I've woken to find Wesley staring at me from no more than an inch away is without count now. At least enough so that I've stopped jumping and yelling. I think that disappoints him.

How can I then return in happy plight,
That am debarred the benefit of rest?
When day's oppression is not eas'd by night,
But day by night and night by day oppressed,
And each, though enemies to either's reign,
Do in consent shake hands to torture me,
The one by toil, the other to complain
How far I toil, still farther off from thee.
I tell the day, to please him thou art bright,
And dost him grace when clouds do blot the heaven:
So flatter I the swart-complexion'd night,
When sparkling stars twire not thou gild'st the even.
But day doth daily draw my sorrows longer,
And night doth nightly make grief's length seem stronger.

I found this little creature sitting on my front doorstep when I got home yesterday evening, eating the remains of an apple he must have dug out of the rubbish.

I thought he was just a ferret at first until he unleashed a torrent of foul abuse. I couldn't let a Jarvey wander the streets in case he got out into a Muggle area and now he's curled up in a small ball on one of the cushions on my couch. He seems rather young and I do find his language amusing so I think I'm going to keep him. If he wants to stay, that is.

Well, that was a fine way to spend my birthday. I have definitely had better birthdays.

I am 37. I feel as if I have wasted my life and it is worth less than nothing.

I suspect that is the hangover talking. Hopefully the potion will work soon. I have to go to work. It is all I have now. You, Sherlock Dorian Ishmael Croaker, are a fool.

Since today is a day for admiring one’s lady (if you are a man – and I can only speak from a man’s point of view), I always thought Propertius had it right, though I wonder if women would agree with me.

Quid iuvat ornato procedere, vita, capillo
et tenuis Coa veste movere sinus,
aut quid Orontea crines perfundere murra,
teque peregrinis vendere muneribus,
naturaeque decus mercato perdere cultu,
nec sinere in propriis membra nitere bonis?
crede mihi, non ulla tuaest medicina figurae:
nudus Amor formam non amat artificem.
aspice quos summittat humus non fossa colores,
ut veniant hederae sponte sua melius,
surgat et in solis formosior arbutus antris,
et sciat indocilis currere lympha vias.
litora nativis praefulgent picta lapillis,
et volucres nulla dulcius arte canunt.

Hesterno, Licini, die otiosi
multum lusimus in meis tabellis,
ut conuenerat esse delicatos:
scribens uersiculos uterque nostrum
ludebat numero modo hoc modo illoc,
reddens mutua per iocum atque uinum.
atque illinc abii tuo lepore
incensus, Licini, facetiisque,
ut nec me miserum cibus iuuaret
nec somnus tegeret quiete ocellos,
sed toto indomitus furore lecto
uersarer, cupiens uidere lucem,
ut tecum loquerer, simulque ut essem.
at defessa labore membra postquam
semimortua lectulo iacebant,
hoc, iucunde, tibi poema feci,
ex quo perspiceres meum dolorem.
nunc audax caue sis, precesque nostras,
oramus, caue despuas, ocelle,
ne poenas Nemesis reposcat a te.
est uehemens dea: laedere hanc caueto.

Since it seems to be fashionable to throw out a quote about love, I suppose I must be fashionable.

The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed. ~Carl Jung

I fail to see any logic in the concept of using terror and threats and even torture (since I'd imagine being exposed to the sunlight would be akin to torture for a vampire) to achieve obedience. While one might indeed get the obedience or answers one seeks, it is hardly going to be a true obedience and reluctant, fearful obedience is really no better in the long run than outright defiance.

Especially with a vampire. I, for one, would be very loathe to irritate a singular vampire, let alone all the vampires in England and Europe in one fell swoop. But then I am a creature of logic and intelligence. I am well read and well educated.

And I can also see that with this one act, the perpetrator has undermined his position with even the vampires who have agreed to follow him. If this was the response to one act of defiance, well, those who are following this so-called 'Dark Lord' had better watch out. If you are not utterly obedient, if you are not mere lackeys with no power and no thought then look at what will happen to you.

And here I thought vampires were too proud and independent to be mere lackeys and bootlickers to a human?

Merry Christmas to everyone. I was almost tempted to launch into a treatise on Christmas in general but my mother's eggnog is far more tempting so I'll spare you all.

My brother sent my the most fascinating book the other day - Flowers for Algernon. He'd been given it as a bit of a joke since the Algernon of the title is a mouse but it is truly a gripping read, though probably one to put a chill through the heart of any Ravenclaw since it deals with intelligence.

Additionally, since it's apparently de rigeur to discuss this, I have in fact finished my Christmas shopping for this year. Admittedly I don't have many to buy for and my family is surprisingly easy. Books are always appreciated - the joys of being from a family of academically inclined Ravenclaws... well, except for my brother, who somehow ended up in Gryffindor. But he's easy enough too.

Now I just have Christmas Day to look forward to. It's my turn to cook this year and I'll be making the mince pies this weekend to start things off. So to those in the DoM, no need to have a heart attack or call out the search parties when I'm not there this weekend. I'm not dead or missing, just cooking. And if you're very good, I'll bring a batch in next Monday.

Zeller's book? Borgin & Burkes? Muggle? Maybe muggle. Seems most likely.

Arithmantic equations regarding sidereal time and the celestial sphere. What was that book I saw that had those sorts of equations in it?

My mother seems to be convinced that I don't eat properly and keeps sending me baskets of food. It's not an entirely bad thing since cooking is one of her skills but there is a part of me that thinks I'm far too old to still have my mother send me food. But then again, it saves me from having to cook because I can cook but not as well as my mother.

And I can't work out whether I'm complaining or not.
